SRF 2024-10-14 14:13

The PAS 7055:2021 Safety Requirements for Button and Coin Batteries was published by the British Standards Institution, effective April 2021, in order to reduce the risk of button and coin batteries being accidentally ingested, to address the safety issues associated with such batteries and to provide a consistent evaluation method for products incorporating these batteries.

01 Scope of application

button and coin batteries with a diameter of not more than 32mm.

* Button cell refers to a small round battery with an overall height less than the diameter, and its electrochemical system does not contain lithium;

* Coin battery, refers to the overall height is less than the diameter of the small round battery, the electrochemical system often contains lithium.

02 Requirements for battery manufacturers

1. Child protection battery packaging: coin lithium battery (regardless of size) and button battery with a diameter of not less than 16mm, which needs to meet the requirements of BS EN IEC 60086-4:2019;

2. Coin batteries or packaging labels containing lithium batteries: should contain text, warnings and contrasting colors that conform to the following figure;

3. Button battery or non-lithium battery packaging label: should contain the following text, warning and contrast color;

4. Battery packaging label (general): should contain the following warning or equivalent:

•“BATTERY WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN ”;

• "If you think batteries might have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention".

5. Marking of batteries: For batteries with a diameter of not less than 20mm, the marked diameter should not be less than 6mm, and there is no color requirement, as shown in the following figure.

For the above 2 and 3 items, if the logo cannot use colors, you can use black and white as shown in the figure.

03 Requirements for manufacturers of consumer products containing batteries

1. Fixed battery compartment: Consumer battery compartment doors/covers containing one or more batteries should avoid removal. It shall meet BS EN 62115:2020 A11:2020, 13.4.1 or BS EN IEC 62368-1:2020 A11:2020, 4.8.3 and 4.8.5;

2. Battery compartment fasteners: If screws or similar fasteners are used to secure the door/cover providing access to the battery compartment, the screws or similar fasteners should be secured so that they remain in the door, cover or device. It needs to meet BS EN IEC 62115:2020 A11:2020, 13.4.6 or BS EN 60598 ‑ 1:2015 A1:2018, 8.2.6;

3. Non-replaceable batteries: batteries that cannot be removed or replaced and can be accessed without the use of tools (such as batteries that may be found in greeting cards or clothing items) should meet the UL4200A:2015, 6.4 standards;

4. Spare or bulk batteries: All spare batteries or bulk batteries provided with consumer products (if the batteries are not pre-installed in a safe battery box) should meet the above-mentioned requirements for battery manufacturers;

5. Instructions and manuals: the warnings and information specified below shall be included in the instructions and/or manuals supplied with the product;

6. Warning and information for consumer products containing batteries:

1) Marking of consumer products containing coin batteries or lithium batteries: The packaging of consumer products containing coin batteries or lithium batteries should contain the text, warnings and contrasting colors shown in Figure 1;

2) Marking on consumer products containing button batteries or non-lithium batteries: Consumer product packaging containing button batteries or non-lithium batteries should contain the warning shown in Figure 2;

3) Marking on the packaging of consumer goods: The packaging of consumer goods containing batteries should contain the following or equivalent warnings:

•“BATTERY WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN ”;

•“If the battery compartment (if applicable) does not close securely, stop using the product and keep it away from children ”;

• "If you think batteries might have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention".

4) Marking on consumer products containing batteries: Products containing batteries (regardless of chemical composition) should include the warning signs shown in the figure below on the product. Where possible, it should be located on or near the battery compartment. The warning on the product should be permanent, clear and indelible.

03 Requirements for Dealers

1. Point of sale information-offline:

retailers should alert consumers to battery hazards by providing clearly visible safety information at display points in stores. Such:

•“BATTERY WARNING: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN ”;

•“Store spare batteries securely ”;

•“Dispose of used batteries immediately and safely ”;

• "If you think batteries might have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention".
