A new way out of waste disposal | UL2799 waste "zero landfill" verification

SRF 2024-10-11 16:23

When it comes to waste disposal, the first picture that often comes to mind is incineration or landfill. In this day after day, "in the process of mechanical treatment, one city after another has been overwhelmed by the burden of waste.

Why do not encourage landfill? What are the hazards?

1. harmful effects on groundwater and surface water

2. landfills emit gases that can affect human health

3. is easy to cause explosion accidents and fire

5. causes suffocation of plants

Waste disposal of the "new way out" in where?

in fact, how to solve the waste problem has become a hot spot of global concern, and the waste treatment models of various countries in the world have their own advantages, such as source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, anaerobic digestion, biofuel and other methods advocated by UL2799 standard, so as to achieve the purpose of turning waste into treasure.

UL2799 -Waste Zero Landfill Environmental Claim Verification

UL2799 is one of the most stringent standards for zero waste to landfill certification, requiring compliance checks and audits of almost all waste streams until they are scientifically diverted. In addition, UL requires that at least 90% of waste be converted through non-waste power generation methods to obtain different levels of certification.

The standard rejects non-calorific value incineration without energy recovery. For incineration with calorific value, the standard sets a 10% upper limit due to the same risk of air pollution and the residual ash still needs to be landfilled. In addition, UL 2799 includes almost all waste conversion methods in the world, covering almost all industries and countries, and as an open standard, it can be continuously updated with the development of science and technology.

Apple Zero Waste Landfill Action

we are reducing the waste generated by our operations and increasing the conversion of waste through our recycling programs. Since the launch of the zero waste landfill project in 2018, we have been working in this direction. Initially, we focused on campuses and retail stores in the United States. Since then, we have continued to grow in the United States and around the world, while continuing to work towards zero waste to landfill. In 2022, our work in recycling and compost manufacturing will achieve a 71% waste conversion rate, up from 68% in 2021, and limit the landfill waste generated by the company's global operations to about 16000 tons 68. Although the use of our facilities has increased during the transition from the temporary closure related to the COVID-19 outbreak, the total amount of waste generated remains at a low level.
