Plastic is one of the most common materials on the earth. In the 1970 s, plastic shopping bags were still a rare novelty. Today, the world produces about 0.35 billion tons of plastic waste every year. Their footprints are all over the world, including the deepest seabed, the highest peak of Mount Everest and the polar ice caps. Plastic bags have brought serious challenges to the environment, which has become a worldwide problem, which needs the joint efforts of the international community to solve.

UL2809 is a standard for UL certification companies in the United States to verify the content of recycled materials in products. UL2809 can verify: pre-consumer recycled material content (PIR), post-consumer recycled material content (PCR), total recycled material content (RC), chemical recycled material content (Chemical Recycling), closed-loop recycled material content (Closed Loop), and biomass source recycled material content (Biomass).

The 6th edition of the UL 2809 Recycled Content Standard was released in April 2023. UL 2809 has been updated several times since its release in 2012. This update is the biggest revision of UL 2809 in recent years.

UL2809 recycled material content certification version 6 of the main changes are:

the change of the standard's official English name from Recycled Content to Defined Content broadens the recognition of recycled materials from different sources and prepares for the validation of sustainable materials to be expanded to more other sources in the future.

Splitting the original 1 standard into 4 standards will make it easier for readers and the industry to understand, and more standards will be expanded in the future.

The definition and audit of chain of custody is consistent with ISO 22095:2020 chain of custody-Common terminology and model.

The definition of recycled materials in UL 2809 is consistent with EN 45557-2020, General Method for Assessing the Proportion of Recycled Materials in Energy-Related Products, in addition to continuing to be consistent with ISO 14021 Environmental Marking and Declaration of Self-Environmental Declaration (Type II Environmental Marking).

UL 2809 version 6 has been implemented on April 6, 2023. New projects applied after this date will be reviewed and issued in accordance with the latest version of the standard; enterprises that already hold the 5th edition of the standard certificate can continue to use the original certificate until the annual review before conversion.
