Interpretation of EPD Environmental Product Declaration Certification

SRF 2024-10-11 16:21

EPD(Eovironmental produt delaration) is a certified environmental product declaration, which reports the environmental data of the whole life cycle of the product according to the international standard IS014025, and the environmental product sound (EPDs) conveys the certified environmental information related to the product or service from the perspective of the life cycle.

The international EPD system is a system for the development and registration of environmental product claims for all goods or services. This system is international and certified by a third party, and transmits flexible source information. The international EPD system is the third most widely used environmental declaration in the world, covering all types of products and services.

EPD Application Field

product-related environmental issues are increasingly being reproduced by businesses and public administrations, and in real money, environmental product declarations are environmental performance reports that address the environmental performance of products and services, including factors such as market dynamics and third-party certification. One of the most important application areas of environmental product declarations is green procurement by governments and businesses, as environmental product declarations provide a fair basis for comparing the environmental performance of products.

Product Category Rules

before developing an EPD, an appropriate product category rule PCR (Product ategory rules must be selected. The PCR used should be listed in the international EPD system and valid at the time of verification. If PCR does not exist for the target product category, it should be developed according to the process described in PCR development. It usually takes 5-12 months to develop a new PCR.

Different product category rules are developed for different types of products, which are the rules behind each environmental product claim. They indicate how information should be collected and calculations performed.

Life Cycle Assessment

in the development of EPD, the environmental performance of the product should be described from the perspective of life cycle, one of the main steps is to carry out the product life cycle assessment LCA( Life Yce assessment),LCA is a technology to assess the environmental aspects related to the product life cycle. The LCA study needs to be performed by an LCA consultant with a background of professional knowledge and calculated with the help of LCA software.

Different types of environmental impacts are separated into upstream processes at various stages of the life cycle: including raw materials, acquisition and refining, and production of intermediate products

core Process: Manufacturing Process

downstream processes: including use and end-of-life phases

EPD Creation Steps

  1. find the appropriate Product Category Rule (PCR). The first step in creating an EPD is to find or create a PCR for a specific product category. The PCR specifies the calculation and reporting requirements for creating a life cycle assessment (LCA) and EPD.

  2. conduct and validate product LCA. The life cycle assessment report is a comprehensive report that records the environmental impact of the product throughout its life cycle. Once a product's life cycle assessment report is completed, it must be verified by an independent third party to confirm that it meets the requirements specified in PCR, ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

  3. preparation of EPD. The EPD presents the results of the life cycle assessment and other information about product performance and other sustainability attributes.

  4. verify EPD. The findings presented in the EPD are thoroughly reviewed and verified by an independent third party.

  5. register EPD. Register and publish the EPD to its database. EPDs are usually valid for five years.

EPD Application Basic Requirements
