World resources are always a hot topic for people. The concept of saving resources and protecting the environment has gradually penetrated into the hearts of the people. Plastic landfills may not rot for hundreds of years. Therefore, recycling recycled materials is an inevitable trend. Only through the recycling and reuse of resources can we truly achieve environmental protection and energy saving.
Recycled plastics (Recycled Plastics) are materials consisting of post-consumer materials or recycled plastics, or both. Plastics that have been recovered after regrinding, reprocessing, recombining plastics, or other processing steps are reused. Recycled plastics have been applied to electronic and electrical products, such as computer casings, TV casings, low-voltage switches and communication equipment, etc. Many international companies especially regard the use of recycled materials as a kind of social responsibility. This year, a famous company mentioned at the new product conference that many plastic parts in mobile phones, tablets and computers use recycled plastics.
UL Yellow Card (or plastic approval program) is a digital product information card that lists the substantive, safety and performance-related characteristics of polymer materials tested by UL according to the corresponding standards. Yellow cards are available when polymer materials are UL-approved component marks.
When electronic appliances using recycled plastics obtain UL certification, their recycled plastics need to meet the relevant UL standard requirements, so the application of recycled plastics for yellow cards needs to meet the performance requirements such as fire retardant. Figure (1) is a yellow card for safety certification of recycled plastics and environmental verification of UL 2809(Environmental Claim Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Recycled Content).
In obtaining the Yellow Card, the facility must obtain prior QMS certification to ISO9001 or its equivalent conversion standard, and analyze the mapping between different production lots to determine if there is a significant impact on critical material properties based on whether the identification terms of standard UL 746A (Polymer Materials-Short Term Performance Evaluation, Polymeric Mate-Rials-Short Term Property Evaluations) are met. Recycled plastics are certified in different ways depending on the source.
If the recycled material is expected to meet the identification provisions of the standard UL746A, three different batches of samples are taken for combustion testing, infrared (IR), thermal reanalysis (TGA) and differential scanning (DSC) testing.
If the test results of different batches of samples are comparable, the source of recycled plastic is considered traceable.
If the sample tests of the three batches cannot be compared, the source of the recycled plastic is not traceable.
It is considered that the identification clause of UL746A cannot be met, and five batches of samples need to be selected for combustion test, tensile test, impact test, pressure test, hot coil ignition or glow wire test, heat distortion temperature and other performance requirements.
