The new standard for the safe use of button battery products is about to be implemented!

on April 6, 2022, the Australian government issued the "Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Safety Standards" and "Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standards", which will be officially implemented on June 22, 2022.

according to the regulations, consumer products containing button batteries (such as fan remote controllers) must meet the requirements of chapters 5 and 6 of UL 4200ASTANDARD FOR SAFETY Products Incorporating Button or Coin Cell Batteries of Lithium Technologies, as well as the following labeling requirements to reduce the risks associated with consumers using button batteries and consumer products containing button batteries.

-Label Requirements-

1 Consumer products containing button/coin batteries should be marked with the following warnings or symbols:

a. It should be marked with an internationally recognized safety warning symbol, which is clearly visible, durable and legible during the expected service life of the product, and the warning is located near the battery;

B. Include the following warnings if space on the consumer product allows:

I warning words (such as DANGER,WARNING or CAUTION), where the letters of the warning word are capitalized;

II states that batteries are dangerous and should be used away from children (no matter whether the batteries are new or old) The battery is hazardous and is to be children away (whether the battery is new or used);

III If there is sufficient space on the consumer product and the battery is a lithium button/coin battery -a statement that the battery, if swallowed or entered any part of the body, may cause serious or fatal injury in 2 hours or less (The battery can cause severe or fatal injuries in 2 hours or less if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body);

IV If the space on the consumer product permits and the battery is a non-lithium button/coin battery -declare that the battery may cause serious injury if swallowed or entered any part of the body (The effect that the battery can cause serious injuries if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body).

Use IEC 60086-4:2019 Clause 7.2(a) symbols for both lithium and non-lithium batteries.

2 consumer product packages containing button/coin cells should be marked with the following warnings or symbols:

a. words of warning (e. g. DANGER,WARNING or CAUTION) where the letters of the warning word are capitalized;

B. A statement that batteries are dangerous and should be kept away from children (no matter whether the batteries are new or old). The battery is hazardous and is to be children away (whether the battery is new or used);

c. The battery can cause severe or fatal injuries in 2 hours or less if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body if the battery is a lithium button/coin battery (the battery can cause severe or fatal injury in 2 hours or less);

d. The effect that the battery can cause serious injuries if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, if the battery is non-lithium button/coin battery;

e.: If you suspect that the battery has been swallowed or entered any part of the body, you should seek medical attention immediately (Medical attention should be immediately if it is suspected the battery has been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body).

The symbols specified in Clause 7.2(a) of IEC 60086-4:2019 may be used for both lithium and non-lithium batteries.

3 For consumer products with buttons/coin batteries sold on e-commerce platforms, the product description should include the following warnings or symbols:

B. Internationally recognized safety warning symbols shall be marked;

c. The battery is hazardous and is to be kept away from children (whether the battery is new or used);

d. The battery can cause severe or fatal injury in 2 hours or less if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body if the battery is a lithium button/coin battery (The can cause severe or fatal injuries in 2 hours or less);

e. The effect that the battery can cause serious injuries if it is swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, if the battery is non-lithium button/coin battery;

f.: If you suspect that the battery has been swallowed or entered any part of the body, you should seek medical attention immediately (Medical attention should be immediately if it is suspected the battery has been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body).

4 It is recommended that when providing consumer products containing button/coin batteries, attach the following warning:

5 Suggested consumer products containing button/coin batteries contain a statement on how to safely dispose of batteries.

6 for button/coin battery body requirements

A. batteries with a diameter ≥ 20mm must be marked with the internationally recognized "keep out of reach of children" mark, which is clearly visible, prominent and indelible, and the diameter of the symbol is at least 6mm.

B. Batteries with diameter <20mm shall be marked with the "keep out of reach of children" sign if the size permits.

7 Containing button/coin battery products with warnings should comply with ISO 3864-2:2016 product security label size and legibility (clause 5) and product security label durability (clause D.7) requirements.
