The increasing popularity of lithium-ion batteries can be attributed to a number of factors. How safe are lithium-ion batteries?

Batteries pose a specific safety hazard, thermal runaway. Thermal runaway refers to the overheating of the battery system, which may cause an exothermic reaction, which may cause the equipment to malfunction or even explode. Manufacturers of battery-powered products need to ensure that they integrate certified batteries safely into their products, while also taking deliberate steps to ensure that their final products meet known safety standards. However, some companies and consumers are still buying and using products that claim to be qualified without independent third-party certification of batteries, electronic components and final product construction.
