Analysis of battery UL1642 test American button battery product standard UL4200A

SRF 2024-10-14 15:46

Recently, some ANSI/UL standards (such as UL1082, UL982, UL1026, UL1081, etc.) have added UL4200A evaluation requirements for products containing lithium button batteries.

For specific effective dates, please note the subsequent update announcements for new versions of each end product standard.

1. Applicable products

consumer (household) products equipped with button lithium batteries with a diameter ≤ 32mm and a diameter greater than the height (but there may be additional supplementary requirements in some end product standards).

2. The main purpose of the new requirements (but not limited to): to reduce the risk of children swallowing.

3. Structure

3.1 For end products with "batteries that allow users to move or replace", the structure needs to meet the following requirements:

3.1.1 Use the IEC61032 probe 11 to test, do not touch the battery. Enclosures that can be opened without the aid of a tool, or opened by hand in less than two independent consecutive movements, are to be opened for evaluation during the inspection.

3.1.2 The product shall be designed as follows to prevent children from moving the battery:

A tool (e. g. screwdriver, coin) is required to open the battery chamber; or
at least two separate and simultaneous actions are required to open the lid or door of the battery chamber by hand.

3.1.3 If the cover or door of the battery chamber is secured by screws or similar fasteners, the fasteners need to be captured on the cover or door.

3.2 the product has a "battery that is not allowed to be moved or replaced by the user", it needs to be effectively prevented from being removed by the user or children. The product should be designed:

3.2.1 the battery is made inaccessible by a casing or similar means; or

3.2.2 The battery is completely fixed by welding, rivets or the like.

4. Test requirements

4.1 Abuse Test:

portable products fell 3 times, handheld products fell 10 times. Each fall from a height of 1 meter to a level hard board.
The shell or battery chamber cover and door shall be subjected to 2J impact test for 3 times.
Rolling test: A force of 330N was applied to the exposed surface for 10 seconds, the force being applied through a plane of approximately 100mm x 250mm.
After testing a, B, c, the battery must not become accessible by applying a force of 45N through the test bar 11 of IEC 61032 for 10 seconds. During the survey, the battery chamber cover and door do not need to be opened and maintain normal function.

4.2 installation firmness test: For the installation firmness of the "battery that is not allowed to be moved or replaced by the user", use a hook and use an outward force of 20 N for 10 seconds, and the battery must not be separated.
