UL498/UL498A/UL817/UL1363 are UL certification standards for plugs and sockets in the United States. The temperature rise of plugs and sockets refers to the difference between the temperature of each test site and the ambient temperature after the test current is applied for a certain period of time under certain conditions. The temperature rise test is one of the important test items in the type test of the plug and socket. By checking whether the temperature rise of the key components of the plug and socket meets the standard requirements, the current-carrying capacity of the current-carrying components and the rationality of the structural design of the appliance are assessed. If the temperature rise of the plug and socket is too high, there is a danger of ignition or electric shock due to the softening of the insulation components during actual use, and the aging of the insulation material will be accelerated.
Due to the power system of different countries in the world, the type and size of plug and socket are very different, resulting in great differences in the test methods of relevant safety standards, which brings a lot of confusion to the design producers and testing personnel of plug and socket. Next, Ankey Jie will introduce you UL498/UL498A/UL817/UL1363 temperature rise test method.
UL498/UL498A/UL817/UL1363 liter test method
1. Test instruments and standard parts: thermocouple, test box, mounting box, pin clamping element, standard safety tube, etc.
2. Installation and connection mode: installed in a concealed metal box and placed in the specified position of the test box. The detachable plug is connected with a three-core cord of 1.25 mm2 and 1000±50mm in length shown in Table 16 of BS6500, while the non-detachable plug is connected with a cord of 1000±50mm in length.
3. Test voltage and current: Each standard of test voltage has different requirements; the test current is rated current (for wire assemblies and power cords, the current with the capacity of the cord is used but not greater than the rated current of the plug).
4. Temperature measurement location and temperature measurement method: use thermocouple to test the terminal, insert sleeve or pin, as close as possible to the position of the insertion surface (30 ℃).
5. Test time: stable.
6. Evaluation of results: The temperature rise of the zero live wire clamping element shall not exceed 37K, and the temperature rise of the terminal/end or the touchable outer surface shall not exceed 52K. If the temperature rise exceeds the limit, it is unqualified, otherwise it is qualified.
Note:
1. In UL498A the over-current protector temperature rise test and UL1363 require rated voltage test; Other American standards have no clear provisions on the test voltage;
2. In the US standard, to reach stability means that 3 consecutive readings (5 minutes apart) at ambient temperature are no longer increased as stable.
Special requirements and characteristics of the American plug and socket temperature rise test method
the temperature rise test method of the American plug and socket standard has a different principle from other national standards, that is, it is required that the heat generated by other heat sources should be as small as possible except for the tested parts. For example, when the temperature rise test of the socket is carried out, a solid pin test plug is used, and the terminal of the test plug shall be shorted with the shortest wire with at least the same current-carrying capacity as the socket. During the temperature rise test of the plug and pin assembly of the wire assembly and the power cord, it is required to use the current with the same capacity of the cord (but not more than the rated current of the plug) as the test current. During the test, the plug is not inserted into the corresponding socket, but the end of the plug is shorted with a wire. The length of the cord is not more than 38mm. If the cord capacity is not more than 18A, 14AWG, use 8AWG, short.
