On March 2, 2023, the New York City Council passed a new regulation aimed at addressing the safety risks caused by the electrification of mobility equipment. The introduction of the regulation is a response to changes in urban transportation methods, as more and more people are adopting lightweight mobile devices to reduce carbon emissions and reduce traffic congestion.
According to laws and regulations, light mobile devices such as electric bicycles and electric scooters and their batteries must pass UL Authorized Laboratories including Ankejie and lightweight mobile devices and their batteries are subject to applicable product certification standards. Specific certification standards are as follows:
the above regulations will be effective August 29, 2023. In other words, it is illegal to wholesale, sell or lease lightweight mobile devices or batteries in New York that are not certified by a third party.
Before the implementation of this new regulation, accidents occurred frequently in major cities due to the use of electric vehicles and batteries:
on March 5, 2023, the New York Fire Department (FDNY) announced that an electric bicycle's carp ion battery caused a level 5 fire in the Bronx, causing at least seven injuries.
In 2022 alone, FDNY received more than 200 light electric vehicle fires, killing six people.
In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received reports of at least 208 fire or overheating incidents, covering 39 states. Up to 19 people.
The implementation of the new regulations will have a positive impact on riders and the public in the city. This regulation will make the city safer and make people more confident in using light mobile devices and their batteries, because they know that these light mobile devices and their batteries have been recognized by safety regulations.
In addition, this regulation will increase consumer confidence in the use of lightweight mobile devices and their batteries in the market. They will purchase lightweight battery equipment and batteries that have been tested and meet safety standards, and can reduce accidental damage and loss due to unsafe reasons.
