1. What are the standards and test methods used to evaluate insulation systems?

The main criteria used to evaluate electrical insulation systems are UL1446Systems ofInsulating Materials that is, the insulating material system. In this standard, depending on the product and the intended end application, there are usually some tests from IEC, ASTM and IEEE methods.

2. How do I know if I need a certified insulation system EIS that meets UL 1446 standards?

The standard of the final product determines whether the insulation system needs to meet requirements of UL1446, which will be determined by the UL Solutions engineer evaluating the final product. The final product manufacturer shall refer to the specific requirements written in the applicable final product standard. If the EIS maximum temperature point is greater than 105°C, most standards require compliance with UL 1446 because the insulation material may thermally degrade at higher temperatures.

3. Is there a list of the different category codes certified by UL1446 and a description of what is covered by each category?

The list of different product categories of UL 1446 certification (commonly referred to as CCN and related product descriptions are as follows:

4. How do I find a compliant EIS?

It is generally recommended to use the iQ electrical insulation system database first. (iQ.UL.com/systems) find an insulation system that meets your needs, and then you can request the UL Solutions system to use the (Adoption) method to turn the UL-certified EIS into your own insulation system. This is the fastest and most cost-effective way to establish your own EIS certification.

In addition, chemical compatibility tests using sealed tubes evaluate additional non-electrically insulating materials, possibly adding materials that are needed but not listed in the adopted EIS. If there is no existing insulation system in the iQ database that meets your specific needs, a full heat aging (FTA) project will be undertaken. In some cases, the final product standard may provide an alternative certification path, such as STTA testing of the motor. Our engineers can help you review your situation to determine the appropriate approach.
