The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Canadian Standards Committee (SCC) released ANSI /CAN/ UL 2743:2023, on April 14, 2023. Next, we will learn about the updated contents of the new portable energy storage product standard UL 2743 from the aspects of applicable product scope, structure and testing.
The range of portable energy storage products applicable to UL 2743:
the maximum capacity of UL2743 energy storage is specified, and the products exceeding the limit belong to UL9540.
2. Hazardous voltage limit adjustment, the safe voltage of outdoor products does not exceed 30 Vdc or 21.2 Vac peak, and indoor products do not exceed 60 Vdc or 42.4 Vac peak.
New definition of portable energy storage: energy storage products that can be lifted and moved by a single person without tools and are not permanently connected to the power system. Can be any of the following types:
a) Hand-held; or
B) Movable and meeting the following conditions:
1) The weight does not exceed 18kg and is not fixed (the weight of the removable battery pack must be considered); or
2) with wheels to move.
UL 2743to portable energy storage product structure requirements update:
1, the new plastic shell fire rating exception, if the interior is metal or V-1 inner shell, plastic shell fire rating can be reduced to HB.
2. Modify the on-board charging voltage range to 24Vdc max.
3. The newly added socket protection shall meet the requirements of UL 1012 on socket protection.
4. Modify the requirements of AC output socket:
a) 120Vac/ 15A max two-hole socket; and
B) 120Vac/ 30A max with grounding three-hole socket and meeting the following requirements:
1) The socket circuit includes double insulation between the ground wire and the main circuit, and meets the requirements of the corresponding label;
2) Socket with UL 943 certified GFCI.
5. Add functional grounding requirements for double insulation products.
6. The battery core certification standard adds UL 1642 and UL 1973 to the original UL 2580 and UL 62133.
Exceptional requirements for new inverters with UL1741 certification do not require additional evaluation.
1. Improve the evaluation method of safety/control circuit, and add a single component failure as an option for UL 60730-1.
2. The newly added wireless charging power shall not exceed 240VA.
3. Added LVLE requirements.
4. Add an exception to the tilt test. Products not exceeding 7kg do not need to evaluate the tilt test.
5. Perfect leakage current test, non-AC input products, measure the leakage current between input/output and ground terminal/contactable metal parts.
6. Perfect the maximum charging voltage and current of the overcharge test:
a) Use the maximum charging voltage and 3 times the maximum charging current for the universal charging port, and consider a single failure when charging for 1.25 hours;
B) Maximum charging voltage and current of external charger or internal charging circuit for non-universal charging port, and single failure shall be considered at the same time when charging for 1.25 hours.
7. Add requirements for lithium battery packs exceeding 1kWh:
a) Battery pack thermal runaway test;
B) Restricted use of places, can not be used in the bedroom or habitable space.
8. Add output and tensile test of interconnection line.
9. Improve the low temperature pretreatment temperature for impact and drop tests, 0 ℃ or the temperature specified by the manufacturer (less than 0 ℃) for pretreatment.
10. Modify the drop test for products with different weights: one 0.9m drop for products exceeding 18kg and three 0.9m drops for products not exceeding 18kg.
11. Improve the rain test
a) The judgment condition is updated to: water cannot touch live parts and dangerous energy parts, and water cannot enter above these parts.
B) Products with fans need to be evaluated in both running and stopped states.
c) Add 2 waterproof grades "rainproof" and "raintight".
12. Improve the test method of emergency starting power supply.
13. New tag shall meet UL 969A.
