UL9540A testing is a safety testing standard for energy storage system products, developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The test mainly reduces the risk of thermal runaway of energy storage products from four latitudes: battery energy storage system installation parameters, installation ventilation requirements, fire fighting facilities, fire fighting strategies and countermeasures, and improves the safety response level of the system.
the scope of UL9540A testing includes batteries, battery packs, transformers and contactors, control devices, auxiliary equipment and other devices, including charging equipment for electric vehicles, on-board chargers (OBC), power battery rectifiers (PFC), and electric Vehicle drive motors (CDM), DC drive motors (DC/DC), etc.
The process of UL9540A testing is divided into four different levels, starting from the battery core, to the module, to the battery unit, and finally to the container/station installation level. Each level of testing includes an assessment of the characteristics and propagation propensity of thermal runaway at different levels, making the potential risk factors of the energy storage system in the cycle life clearer, while also improving the awareness of owners and firefighters of the danger of thermal runaway.
The purpose of UL9540A test is to enable local fire agencies or AHJ ( Authorities Having Jurisdiction) at the North American level to objectively evaluate the fire safety capability of the energy storage system to be installed in the state area, and whether the fire protection design customized according to the test evaluation meets the fire protection requirements of the NFPA855 Act.
