UL9540A test the process and method are explained in detail as follows:

UL9540A cell test:

  • objective: To determine the method and parameters of cell thermal runaway, to determine the exhaust temperature of the cell, to determine the thermal runaway temperature of the cell, and to analyze the thermal runaway gas (composition and performance).

  • Process: sample pretreatment (charge and discharge the battery cell for two cycles according to the manufacturer's regulations; before the test, keep the battery core charged to 100 SOC and rest for at least 1h and at most 8h; In order to prevent excessive expansion during the test, the battery core should simulate the binding conditions in the BESS module (such as fixed steel plate)); Thermal runaway test (place the battery core in a sealed explosion-proof tank and fill the tank with nitrogen; Use a flexible film heater to induce thermal runaway of the battery core (if it cannot be triggered, use needle and overcharge, alternative heat sources and other methods to trigger). Record the temperature during exhaust and the starting temperature of thermal runaway; Collect the exhaust gas of the battery core); Gas analysis and combustion limit measurement of combustible gas (analysis of gas composition; According to the composition of combustible gas of gas, measure the combustion limit of gas; Measure the combustion rate of gas and the maximum explosion pressure of gas); Monitoring data (thermal runaway method; Exhaust temperature of cell; Cell triggers thermal runaway temperature; the composition of the released gas; the total amount of gas; the lower limit of gas flammability; the rate of gas combustion; the maximum explosion pressure).

UL9540A module test:

  • objective: To verify the degree of thermal runaway spread of the module, to determine the heat release rate and module temperature, to determine the gas composition and release rate, and to determine the explosion hazard.

  • Process: sample pretreatment (charge and discharge the battery cell for two cycles according to the manufacturer's regulations; Before the test, keep the battery cell charged to 100 SOC and rest for at least 1h and at most 8h); Thermal runaway test (the test is carried out in the smoke collection hood (real-time gas analysis is collected); The method of heat runaway in the battery cell is adopted, and one or more battery cells are thermally runaway; record the weight of the module before and after thermal runaway); monitoring data (including the degree of thermal runaway spread of the module, heat release rate and module temperature, gas composition and release rate, explosion hazard, etc.).
