According to US media reports on May 15, 2024, a fire broke out at the OTAY MESA Gateway energy storage power station in southern San Diego, California at 3:45 p.m. local time. After more than a day, the fire was controlled at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Toxic smoke and hydrogen from the fire forced nearby businesses to evacuate and Donovan state prisons to take shelter in place.

NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems: 2023 Edition, Issued Aug. 12, 2022.
The fixed energy storage system installation constraints are proposed to reduce BESS hazards, such as Max BESS Size: 50 kWh.
BESS
exceeding installation limits shall be tested in accordance with UL 9540A.
Should be tested or witnessed by an approved laboratory and provide a test report. The test report should analyze the gas composition and verify that the thermal runaway fire spread in a single ESS unit will not spread to adjacent units.

the test report shall be accompanied by a supplementary report prepared by a registered fire protection design professional explaining the test data relevant to the ESS installation requirements.
